When it comes to charging a lithium-ion battery, using a charger is the safest and most recommended way. However, what if you’re stranded somewhere and the charger is of no use, what if you lost it or simply forgot it at home while leaving for a vacation. Well, this sounds like a horror story to me.
In case you forgot your charger or simply misplaced it, then don’t panic. There are a lot of other ways that can be used to charge a lithium-ion battery without using a charger.
In this post, we have mentioned a list of different methods that can be used to recharge a lithium-ion battery. However, before we start, remember that charging your lithium-ion battery without using a charger isn’t considered safe. Even though it is an easy and straightforward process. We only recommend using these methods under special or urgent circumstances.
Now without wasting any further time let’s get started.
Charging by Using a USB Port
First, we recommend charging your lithium-ion battery by using a USB port. This is basically the easiest method which doesn’t require anything special. If you have a USB jack in your car or a computer around you can charge your lithium-ion battery quickly.
Follow the step-by-step guide mentioned below to get started.
- First of all, get access to a USB cable.
- Now, connect the end of the USB cable to an electronic device that includes a USB port. This includes different things such as a laptop, PC, power bank, camera, etc.
- Now grab the cable and connect the charging end of it to your lithium-ion battery.
- Turn on the electronic device that you utilized.
After a few moments, you will notice that your battery is charging. There are a few safety tips associated with this method and we recommend you guys follow them. First of all, don’t take out the battery, keep it inside the device that you want to charge. Do not charge multiple devices at one time by using this method.
And if you are concerned about battery damage then don’t worry. Charging your lithium-ion battery by using your laptop or any other electronic device isn’t harmful. It would neither affect your device nor the battery. The only trouble here is the charging speed.
You see, charging with the help of a USB port from a laptop or PC is quite a slow process and you have to be patient.
Charging from a Car Battery
The next possible solution to charge your lithium-ion battery is by using a car battery. This can be done by connecting your lithium-ion batteries to lead-acid car batteries. However, for this process, we recommend the use of light bulbs (small ones) as a necessary measure.
Using a light bulb regulates the current flow which is why I recommend its use. When charging your lithium-ion battery (6V) with a lead-acid battery (13V) you will require three light bulbs. Make sure to connect them in a parallel way. In this way, a total of 0.5 amperes of current will flow towards your lithium-ion battery so that you can charge it properly.
There are a few precautionary measures that can’t be left unattended while charging from a car battery. Do not leave the battery unattended, and make sure to wear a protective mask so that you can avoid any damage to your eyes (possible damage from sparks).
Charging by using an Alternative Battery
Charging via an alternative power source is another effective method to boost up your lithium-ion batteries without a charger. Although, for this method to work you will need 3 AAA batteries to start the process. Follow the steps below to get more insights into how this method works.
- Once you have grabbed the AAA batteries, organize the batteries in order and then connect all of them.
Each of the three AAA batteries comes with 1.5V of power and together they will be able to bring in 4.5V. And when it comes to charging a cell phone battery, a total of 3.7V is required.
Since your alternative batteries will be producing 4.5V altogether, that is why you won’t face any hurdles while charging your lithium-ion batteries.
By Using a Bench Supply
The next charging method on our list includes the use of a Bench Supply. It is yet another effective way to charge your lithium-ion batteries without any hassle. For this method, there are a few things that you have to take care of.
First of all, turn the voltage and the current knob to the left side. After that attach it to the recipient battery (that is being charged at the moment). Now turn on the bench supply.
While charging, you have to ensure that the knobs do not pass the current flow of 500mA on the road to your battery. Also, ensure that the wires are connected to their respective sockets so that there isn’t any damage or harm coming towards your battery.
By Using a Clip Charger
The last method to charge your lithium-ion battery without having the proper means includes a clip charger. It is an incredible way to charge your battery quickly.
Follow the steps below to know how you can power up your lithium-ion batteries by using a clip charger.
- First of all, grab the lithium-ion battery from your mobile phone or any other gadget.
- After that adjust the battery on the charging space of the clip charger
- Now after you have done that, plug in the clip charger on the power board and then turn on the switch.
- After a few moments, you will notice that your lithium-ion battery is charging without any hassle.
However, there are a few things that you have to keep in mind before using a clip charger. First of all, a clip charger is quite rare these days and if you don’t have one, you can get a universal USB clip charger from the market instead. It would be easier to access the USB clip charger as compared to the standard one.
